I’ve always loved the look of old jewelry, so I grew up thinking of rubies as the clear, sparkly stones I saw in the Victorian pieces my mom sold through her antique business. It wasn’t until I started choosing stones for my own jewelry that I discovered the wonderful world of opaque rubies.
These are very different from the showstopping rubies you might find in a royal tiara. They’re deeper and more subdued, with a little murkiness and mystery that I find really appealing. I love that they have so much personality without needing to shout for attention.
That’s what drew me to these stones for this pair of earrings. Their deep red color and quiet moodiness add just the right amount of richness, while the tiny silver forget-me-nots make sure they don’t take themselves to seriously.
